Amazing news about Dyson's £2.5 billion investment in the UK. They are set to build a 500 acre campus in Wiltshire 'dedicated to artificial intelligence and robotics'. Incidentally, Apple's new campus in Silicon Valley is 'only' 175 acres.
In the past 5 years Dyson has quietly quadrupled its headcount to 3,500 - half of them in R&D. James Dyson is on record that he wants to create a UK workforce of 14,000, many of them based on the new campus.
James Dyson is undoubtedly the closest thing we have in the UK to Steve Jobs. Its super to see that the fantastic R&D talent that the UK produces will not have to go and work at Apple, Google, Facebook or Tesla in order to pursue truly exciting and leading edge endeavors that will have a global impact.
At the risk of stating the obvious, the better we can harness our talent in UK ventures then the sooner we will create a true global success story.
A new multimillion-pound research and development centre is being opened in Wiltshire by Sir James Dyson. The new tech campus will be based on a 517-acre former Ministry of Defence (MoD) site at Hullavington. The vacuum and electronics company is aiming to double its workforce to about 7,000 in the next five or six years. Sir James said: "After 25 years of UK growth, and continuing expansion globally, we are fast outgrowing our Malmesbury Campus."
