Congratulations to Richard Barlow and his team at Chester-based Wejo that is emerging as one of the World-leaders in connected car data.
I love coming across stories like this (though I must admit I knew where to look for this one - hiding on Sky News!) 5 year old Wejo has been quietly going about its business. No high-profile fundraisings or press releases trumpeting their bold objectives. They have just diligently been collecting data on over 78 billion miles of car journeys. And that, it turns out, is really rather valuable.
Knowing the team as I do, I am certain that this will go down as an early step on a very long and exciting journey. Great news for Wejo and great news for UK-tech.
In total, the deal values wejo at $275m (£213m), with GM taking a 35% stake in the British company. Wejo was founded by Richard Barlow, an entrepreneur who foresaw the value of data from 'connected cars' to insurers, local authorities and breakdown recovery services. To date, the start-up has processed data from 78 billion miles of car journeys.
